Murrine Madness! intermediate-advanced
The first mosaic glass canes were thought to have been produced in Egypt as early as the 360 BC. and reached its climax in Rome and Alexandria during the two centuries around the birth of Christ. Mosaic cane then declined rapidly, due to the wide spread of the use of the blowpipe and, perhaps, to a change in taste.
Complex cane made on the torch, or torch and furnace combination, became nearly extinct, until the last few years. Recently Brian Kerkvliet and other artists have taken it upon themselves to re-explore this fascinating world of mosaic cane at the torch. Many complicated furnace techniques can be achieved on a small scale at the torch, Brian will share his years of furnace and lampworking experience, in this unique cross pollination of techniques. Murrine, advanced twisted canes, marbles, clear cased cane, application and variety of uses for cane, will be some of the processes covered in this class. Other processes can be demonstrated if there is interest.Based on students skills and interests, this class will explore various issues. Then you can take this understanding and apply it to your own style of work. The class is intended for intermediate to advanced glass artists who have either worked with the furnace and/or the torch.
